Prior to joining WVU in November 2013, Gypsy served Northern Arizona University (NAU) as the Assistant Vice Provost for the Professional Education Unit and as the Interim Director of the NAU Center for Science Teaching and Learning in the College of Engineering, Forestry, and Natural Sciences.  She previously served for two years as the Dean of the NAU College of Education.  Prior to that, she served the NAU College of Education as the Associate Dean for eight years and, during that time, had the opportunity to be mentored by College of Education Dean, Dr. Daniel Kain. As part of the NAU College of Education, she had the opportunity to collaborate with the GEAR UP staff and support the mission of GEAR-UP.  Gypsy was fully committed to providing access to higher education to citizens in rural communities throughout Arizona.  During her time at NAU, she conducted research in the area of college student development, learning, and motivation. Her previous grant-funded activities and publications have been in the area of engineering education. 

Gypsy has extensive administrative experience in student affairs and has worked at East Stroudsburg University in Pennsylvania and the University of California at Berkeley. She earned a bachelor’s degree in social work and sociology from St. Cloud State University in Minnesota. She earned her master’s degree in counseling from the University of Texas at El Paso. Her doctorate, from the University of Northern Colorado is in educational psychology, with an emphasis in human development and learning & cognition.

  • Recipient of the Betty L. Harrah Award for Manuscript of the Year for “Assessing the Academic Climate of University Residence Halls” published in The Journal of College and University Student Housing in 1998
  • Honorable Mention for the 1998-99 Robert P. Cooke Talking Stick Article of the Year Award for “Focusing on the Positive Aspects of Student Behavior” published in the September 1998 issue of the Talking Stick
  • Recipient of recognition from the NAU Office of Disability Support Services for meeting the needs of students with disabilities (nominated by undergraduate student), 1998
